Inclement Weather Notification

leaf.png

Indiana winters are unpredictable. Have a plan for your child’s care in case of a school delay or a school closing.

The South Bend Empowerment Zone works diligently to ensure that decisions regarding school closings and delays are made conscientiously and in a timely manner. We will make every effort to notify families as soon as possible. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

Service building staff begin the snow removal process at 1 a.m. when there are over two inches of snow on the ground. Between 2 and 4 a.m. transportation staff perform road checks and ensure that school parking lots are or can be cleared in time for school. South Bend Empowerment Zone works closely with South Bend Community School Corporation, the South Bend Police Department, the St. Joseph County Police Department, Indiana State Police, and the city and county road crews. The Empowerment Zone also monitors local weather channels and radar, and consults with other area school districts when considering delaying or closing schools.

If it is determined that school will need to be delayed or closed, the notification process will begin around 5 a.m.

How will I be notified if there is a delay or cancelation? â€‹

In the event that schools are closed due to severe weather, we will communicate the cancelations via:

  • Automatic phone dialers – Make sure your phone number is updated with your school office.

  • Local TV news and media.

What happens if school is canceled?

  • Schools are closed with no in-person classes. Elementary and middle school after-school activities and evening events are canceled.

  • When the school closing is announced, you will also find out if it will be an eLearning Day. That information will be part of the cancelation announcement.

What happens if there is a two-hour delay?

  • All elementary schools and Navarre Middle School will start two hours later than the regular schedule and will end at the regular dismissal time. All Empowerment Zone buses will make stops two hours later than the regularly scheduled time. For example, if your normal bus pick-up time is 6:45 a.m., the delayed pick-up time will be 8:45 a.m.

  • There will be no morning Pre-K sessions. Afternoon Pre-K sessions will proceed as normal.

In the event that students are asked to have an eLearning day, students are expected to:
